What is backflow?
Backflow is the unwanted reversal of water flow in your plumbing system. Instead of clean water flowing into a building, contaminated water (from irrigation, boilers, fire systems, or industrial equipment) can be siphoned back into the public drinking supply. A backflow prevention assembly is a mechanical valve that blocks this reversal and protects the potable water supply.
Why backflow testing is required
California’s Title 17 regulations — enforced locally by EBMUD, the City of Richmond Water Resources Department, and other East Bay purveyors — require that every backflow prevention assembly be tested annually by an AWWA-certified tester. Properties most commonly required to test include:
- Commercial buildings, restaurants, breweries, and medical facilities
- Homes with irrigation systems, pools, or auxiliary water sources
- Multi-unit residential buildings and HOAs
- Properties with fire-suppression sprinkler systems
How the testing process works
- Notification. Your water district mails an annual test notice with a deadline (usually 30 days).
- Inspection. Our certified tester locates the assembly, verifies make/model, and inspects for visible damage or leaks.
- Test. Calibrated gauges measure pressure differentials across each check valve. Water is shut off for roughly 15–20 minutes.
- Report. We submit the passing test results directly to your water district and email you a signed copy for your records.
- Repairs (if needed). If the assembly fails, we provide a same-day quote for repair, rebuild, or replacement and re-test once complete.
Types of backflow assemblies we service
- Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ / RP) assemblies
- Double Check Valve (DCV) assemblies
- Pressure Vacuum Breakers (PVB) and Spill-Resistant PVBs
- Atmospheric Vacuum Breakers (AVB) on irrigation systems
What it costs and how long it takes
A typical annual test takes 20–30 minutes on site. Pricing in the East Bay generally runs $85–$175 per assembly, depending on size and accessibility. Property managers with multiple assemblies receive volume pricing. Repairs and replacement parts are quoted separately and only after your approval.
